Corporate Volunteering at Pepenbury
On Wednesday 14th September three members of the XperiSoft team volunteered at local charity Pepenbury.
The day was organised via their volunteer co-ordinator Sue Lawrence and they spent the day with gardener Tim, maintaining the shrubberies and bed borders. All three team members thoroughly enjoyed the day and the opportunity to help Pepenbury with their ground maintenance.
What does Pepenbury do?
Pepenbury is based in Pembury, just outside Tunbridge Wells and provides care and support services to adults with learning disabilities. The charity, previously known as Larkfield Hall, has been running for over 80 years and currently provides support to over 250 people based in West Kent.
Pepenbury services range from residential care, day services and supported living. Their main site at Pembury is located in a quiet village and is home to a number of animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and donkeys. The charity provides training opportunities through a City & Guild qualification in Small Animal care, Horticultural, IT and retail skills to help service users to gain volunteering and employment opportunities.
Karl Pay, Head of Operations, has been with the charity for three years and explained how Pepenbury is dedicated to encouraging service user independence, where they are able to make personal choices about their care and the activities they are involved with. Every service user has a personalised support plan that reflects their preferences and choices.
Pepenbury promotes an active lifestyle and provides numerous activities for the service users to be involved in. Activities range from pottery and music lessons to cycling and bowling. They also provide independent living skills training, encouraging residents to live as independent as possible.
Pay stated that the corporate volunteering days are extremely important to Pepenbury. The work that the volunteers complete reduces the pressure on the groundsman and enables projects to be completed in a timely manner and with 100 acres to maintain there is always plenty to do. The cost of running the service for one day alone is close to £17,000.
There are many ways for companies to get involved with Pepenbury, with projects ranging from gardening to building projects within their woodland. They are always looking for new companies, and we recommend volunteering at Pepenbury.
